Caring for Silk

Caring for Silk

Proper caring for silk helps preserve its natural softness, smooth finish and luxurious appearance. By following a few simple care steps, your Silkburys silk bonnet, sleep mask or baby silk accessory can stay beautiful for years.

Washing Silk

Hand washing is the safest way to care for silk.

  • Use cool or lukewarm water (up to 30°C).
  • Choose a gentle detergent suitable for delicate fabrics or silk.
  • Gently wash the fabric without rubbing or twisting.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Removing Stains

Treat stains as soon as possible for the best results.

  • Apply a small amount of gentle silk detergent directly to the stain.
  • Leave it for around 15 minutes before washing.
  • For stubborn stains, mix equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water.
  • Test the solution on a hidden area first.
  • Dab the stain gently with a clean white cloth—avoid rubbing, which can damage the silk fibres.

    Ironing Wrinkled Silk

Silk wrinkles naturally, but it can be ironed safely.

    • Set your iron to the Silk or lowest heat setting.
    • Place a lightweight cotton cloth between the iron and the silk.
    • Iron gently using smooth, controlled movements.
    • Turn the garment over to iron the reverse side if needed.
    • Hang the silk on a clean hanger and allow it to cool completely before storing.

    Drying Silk

    After washing:

    • Never twist or wring silk.
    • Gently press out excess water using a clean towel.
    • Hang or lay the silk flat to air dry.
    • Keep it away from direct sunlight and high heat.

    Storing Silk

Store silk in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid overcrowding or folding silk tightly to help maintain its natural shape and smooth finish.
